Vacation is almost upon us, and you can feel the anticipation of the students for the long lazy days of summer. However, while we want our students to rest, grow and explore new things there are ways to support your student's growth particularly in reading through days of family travel, reunions, parties, and celebrations. A key factor to reading success is building intrinsic motivation within a child. How to achieve this is to encourage and support them in reading books of their choosing that are at a "just right level." This "just right level" is a book that your child can read and discuss with passion. Your child might love to read non-fiction, comic books or discovering new series of books support them as they explore these jewels of text. As remember what you believe is a great book might not be what interests your child. So we urge you to take your student to book shops, libraries and to online resources so that they can choose books, magazines, and comics that reflect their interests, passions, and lives.
In 1H this week we have been developing our independent inquiry skills! In our How the World Works unit, we have inquired into different forces. We have moved from conducting experiments with magnets, friction, push/ pull and are now focusing on gravity. This week we made paper airplanes to help further our understanding of gravity. We have learned that planes need thrust and lift to fly, and that gravity and drag are the counteracting forces.
We tested our paper airplanes and reflected on what each of our planes needed more of: lift or thrust. We identified that some types of paper airplanes stayed in the air longer because they had more lift.

“We tried to see what happened when we threw our airplane, and then we explained what we needed to add to make it fly better.”- Damya

Students from 3rd grade classes produced music videos using songs they performed at the Elementary School’s Arts Festival. This culminating project began at the beginning of the school year when students embarked on a musical journey that led them to the creation of songs to perform for the Arts Festival. As a way to integrate technology (music and video production), we developed the videos’ soundtracks using Logic and Garageband, and edited video footage using iMovie.
On May 17, we had the screening of the music videos in the auditorium. If you did not attend the screening, here are the links to the videos.
Enjoy!
