News from our KG Vice Principal, Sally Potts
Our KG staff and students had an absolutely wonderful time at our National Day celebrations. The halls were so colorful with everyone dressed in national colors and / or special clothing. The students certainly enjoyed the activities which continued throughout the day. They did crafts, songs and talked about the UAE.
Thank you to all of those parents who were able to join us for the activities.
One child told me, “We are celebrating the UAE all day and every day!”.
We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Grade 4B News
This week we had lots of fun learning about our Unit of Inquiry. Our Unit of Inquiry is about how Our Understanding of Science has Evolved Over Time and Shapes the Future. We saw old machines that changed our life. We have learned that ideas evolve and take tiny steps to change. We also learned that people innovate and turn old ideas into new ones. In writing we are learning how to make non-fiction books and we learned about text features. We all picked a topic that we will write about. We are working so hard making a presentation so we can present it in the auditorium next week at our Community Share. We had lots of fun learning with our teacher Mr. Brad.

On National Day we had a big party and some of us went on stage to perform so we can recite a poem and many people performed and talked about the U.A.E. We had lots of fun practicing for performances. It was fun dressing up in the U.A.E. colors red, green, white and black. When we went outside there were many fun games and activities. For example, there was henna, mini-games, dancing, and face
painting. There was also a lot of yummy food. There was also a falcon named Dilam. A big thanks for Ms. Reda, Ms. Mariam, Ms. Shorah, Ms. Rawya, and the rest of the Arabic staff for all the things they did to help us with National Day!

In 3rd grade...
We have been investigating How the World Works in our third Unit of Inquiry. We have been exploring the central idea of how Changes in the Earth influence the way people live their lives. Some vocabulary words we are focusing on are geology, natural disasters, geography, and adaptation. In addition, students are facing the challenge of choosing a region/place and the natural forces that cause a change in the Earth that affects the people that live in that area and their response. Then students will be responsible for one final project from the menu board to present to the class. The PYP Attitudes are curiosity and integrity. We are also covering the Learner Profile Attributes of inquirer and knowledgeable.
During math, we have been busy analyzing various ways to measure capacity, length, and weight/mass. Soon we will move into data handing and analysis which includes surveying, tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs, line plots, and line graphs. Our busy third grade mathematicians will also start multiplication before the winter break.
In writing and reading workshop, our focus is on nonfiction informational text. Students have chosen a topic they are an expert on and are writing an informational book with a table of contents. They are organizing the content into a logical order for the chapters. We are practicing how to be strong readers that can learn and teach others after we read nonfiction texts.
Grade three is a fabulous place to be at Gems American Academy! We particularly enjoyed National Day with the spicy shawarma, Arabic games, outside time, a live falcon, and the beautiful henna. =)
Sincerely,
The Grade 3 Team

National Day in KG
KG1G were so excited about celebrating National Day. It was Blake’s first time getting his face painted and he was delighted all day long. The students were amazed that a bird flew into visit us in school for the day. They had a wonderful time playing different games in all of the stalls.
KG2 enjoyed a wonderful week preparing for and celebrating National Day. Students wore national dress along with UAE colors. They got to enjoy face painting, henna, games, puppet show, special national day treats, and dance. A special thank you to all parents, staff, and students who donated to make this a day to remember. Smiles all around!

KG Creative Arts
We are learning to be thinkers in KG1 Creative Arts! As students mixed the three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow), they discovered they can create purple, orange, and green!
