News from our PYP Coordinator, Mike Hopaluk
Elementary Community Share
On Thursday morning, students from 1C and 2D shared some of their learning from their current units of inquiry. The Grade 1 students have been inquiring in celebrations around the world and sang ‘Happy Birthday” in many different languages including Polish, Arabic, Italian, French, English and Spanish. In Grade 2 students have been learning about procedural writing in Lab Reports. They shared all the components of writing up a report for a Scientific Experiment and wowed the audience with three live experiments. It was so wonderful to watch such young learners being so knowledgeable and confident on stage in presentations that they planned and prepared themselves.
This week’s Community Share also saw the unveiling of the new “VIP Section” for students who received Star Student Awards this week. Those students got a front row view of the sharing before they were called up to be recognized on stage for their demonstration of PYP attitudes and/or IB Learner Profile attributes. You can see more photos of the event here.

Have great afternoon,
This week has been very exciting for the Grade 2’s as we continued to inquire into our new unit ‘How the World Works’. Students have been completing design tasks and had great fun trying to build the tallest tower they could using 1 A4 page and nothing else but a pair of scissors. The designs were very creative and perhaps we have some budding future architects amongst us. During Math we have been inquiring into 2D and 3D shapes and we have continued our Inquiry into the maker space where we have built on our unit and Math knowledge. We are very excited for our upcoming field trip during which we will look at structures in Abu Dhabi, the Mosque and their design features. Take a look at some of the fun things that we have been doing in 2D! Enjoy
For our Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet, students have been inquiring into the different choices they can make, both at school and at home to support the sustainability of the earth’s resources. We have done several inquiry activities around renewable and non-renewable resources and how this effects our earth. Some of our thoughts:
“I realized how important it is to help save our resources.” – Maxime
“If people keep chopping down tress, we will eventually run out of tress and we will also run out of oxygen.” – Arjun
“I learned that the more we take stuff there won’t be some for the last generation.” - Ziya
Students have just begun to investigate how discarded items can be repurposed into new and useable items. For example, old water bottles can be repurposed into useable birdfeeders.
We are developing our work as researchers through both Reader’s and Writer’s Workshops. Research clubs have been researching and gathering information from a variety of texts that are based on topics from our Unit of Inquiry.
Third grade writers are working on developing bold opinions and passions into persuasive speeches. Here are a couple of first drafts.
“We Should Try and Stop Pollution”
So many people in the world pollute. You might think it’s not a big problem but really it’s a huge problem! There are so many kinds of pollution, air pollution, water pollution and much more. So many sea animals die from pollution. They eat garbage and plastic that gets into the lakes and oceans. And also chemicals from factories that go into water. There is only one cure for pollution and that is REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. It is very important to do this, it helps our worlds from not being a big dump. Also it helps our environment. I know you may be wondering how does it help the world? Well, I will tell you that when we don’t recycle our land will get dirtier and dirtier. So please don’t pollute, it only makes our land disgusting. No one would ever want to live here if all the pretty animals and plants die. Remember everyone needs to do their part - clean up!

Friends
Have you ever wondered what life would be like without friends? Friends are very important because they can cheer you up when you are sad. Also you can have fun together at recess playing tag or other games. If you are getting bullied a friend can really help.
You can make friends at schools, pools, parks, a sports activity and more places! You might also think that play dates or sleepovers are not fun but they are very fun! Everybody needs a friend because it’s one of the best things you can have. Everybody needs a friend!

Bottle Flipping in Class
Bottle flipping should be allowed in class because it does not make THAT much noise. Plus everything in class makes noise. It is also a talent, people enjoy it and it is relaxing. If they stop bottle flipping a lot of people will have nothing to do at recess. It is really fun and if you see people do it it looks kind of boring throwing a bottle around, but if you try it maybe you will think differently! Plus it is recycling and repurposing an old bottle to make it into a thing kids and even adults like to do.

News from our KG Vice Principal, Sally Potts
Our Sports’ Day last week gave all of our students a chance to shine as athletes—both physically and mentally. Miss Claire and Miss Deniza worked for weeks with all of our KG classes so that they could practice their skills in throwing balls, running races and following rules in a game.
They also learned how to be risk-takers and communicators. It was a joy to see all the work come together on one day in front of all of our parents.
Thank you to all of you who were able to join us. Our KG students are now working with are Creative Arts’ teachers to prepare for our upcoming Arts’ Festival.
There is always so much going on in our KG department!
