News from our Elementary Principal, Ben Voborsky
Hello GAA Community,
It has been an exciting second week back from winter break. We had a fantastic Grade 5 community share this morning and our students really demonstrated their confident presentation skills. Our students really highlighted what makes GAA special today as they did during our very successful ADEC inspection. I am over the moon that we were able to share our new ADEC A2 rating with our community this week. Our teachers deserve so much credit and it really validates all the exceptional work that they have done and continue to do!
MAP assessment feedback went home today and is a good indicator of attainment. Please remember all students have good and bad days. If you have any questions please see your teacher or Sofia Lyons, Elementary Vice Principal. A great parent resource is NWEA Parent Toolkit (https://www.nwea.org/resources/parent-toolkit/). It is also available in Spanish. Once again I am so happy to see the amount of growth demonstrated by our GAA students.
I was able to attend the International Food Festival (IFF) parent informational session held in the auditorium. I want to thank Teri and GAAPA for their organization of this community building event. The parent turnout was strong. Please connect with the IFF organizers and get onboard with sharing your culture while meeting people from your home country and providing another awesome community building experience.
Have an excellent weekend,
Ben Voborsky

MAP reports
Please join us on Wed. Jan 27 at 12:40 in the auditorium for a 30-minute informational session about the MAP report. We will discuss how to read the report, and overview the purpose of the results. Students in gr.2 – 10 will be bringing their MAP reports home sometime over this next week.

Dear Parents,
2016 a New Year that presents us with endless new possibilities.
When contemplating, what new adventures our students might embark upon during this New Year it is important to consider the experiences that are open to them every day through the world of reading.
Reading is a gateway skill to so many areas of life and one that must be nurtured and used often to develop fully. Here at GAA, we have a beautiful library filled with books on every conceivable topic and in many languages other than English. Research repeatedly shows that students who read, and who are read to on a regular basis develop an intrinsic motivation to read. As reading is like any other activity the more we engage in an activity, the better we become at it and as such the self-motivation to keep reading is developed.
Reading is no different from soccer or basketball that require hours of practice to become a skilled player. To become a reader we must read and be surrounded by abundant resources of the printed word. For suggestions and tips on how to engage your child in reading, check out Reading Rockets at http://www.readingrockets.org/article/reading-tips-parents-11-languages
Happy Reading!

Dear Parents
It has been another wonderful week in KG. We are very much looking forward to seeing all of our parents this coming Tuesday and Wednesday to celebrate our Arts’ Festival. Our halls have been filled with the sound of singing, dancing and the arts. We have an amazing team of teachers who are dedicated to creating a wonderful environment of learning.
Thank you also to all of our parents who have helped with our costumes!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Kirsty Van Rooyen and Carla Heard wonderful maternity leaves with their new babies. We will miss them in our KG wing. We welcome Miss Kera and Mrs. Suzie who are taking over the classrooms and the learning while they are gone.
