News from our Secondary Principal, Craig Randall
Dear parents,
Congratulations to our IB Diploma Seniors. As of Friday afternoon they will have completed their exams and high school classwork, Forever. They will have the senior breakfast, graduation rehearsals and the final ceremony (Graduation) to look forward to on June 2nd.
Our non-IB Diploma seniors are not far behind. They will be sitting their final exams between Sunday and Thursday of the coming week. After studying hard over the couple of days we will be saying congratulations to them too.
It’s an exciting time in the Secondary School as we began our end of year ceremonies this week. Our Middle School Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday. Over 110 awards were given including those for ‘Best Performance’ and ‘Most Improved’ for every course offered in the Middle School. In addition, there were awards in each grade for the ‘Outstanding Citizen’, ‘Outstanding Student’ and the ‘Wildcat’. The latter is awarded to the student who made the most dramatic turnaround. In addition, awards were given for students demonstrating the ten IB Learner Profiles. However, the highlight of the event was the ‘Overall Outstanding Student’ award, which went to Athina Bohner.
Our ‘beginning of the end’ continues next week with a Student Council end of year celebration on Sunday. This is followed on Wednesday by our Grade 9-11 Awards Ceremony. On Thursday we have our Grade 8 Promotion Ceremony in the auditorium from 9:30am, followed by a little celebratory student gathering in the gym from 10:30-12:00.
Busy times here at GAA.
Regards,
Craig Randall

French Spelling Bee Winners !!
For the first time Gems American Academy students participated in a French Spelling Bee competition. After many months of perfecting their pronunciation and spelling, a group of four grade 6 students rose up to the challenge and competed against Gems Wellington Academy, Silicone Oasis, Dubai. On Thursday 13th of May Madame Newman and Noora Al Wali, the grade 11 spelling bee “coach” travelled with the students to Dubai to participate in their first French Spelling Bee. The atmosphere was both stressful and exciting, due to the emphasis put on the enunciation of each word and letter.

The students took their role seriously and were proud to represent their school in this competition. The beginning was tense but as the competition started the students fell into an easy rhythm. Maheeka Sharma, Injoon Jun, Dylan Hilton, and Preethika Kannan were all exceptional and persevered through the competition; some even beating their own personal records.
Both schools encouraged each other when difficult words were to be spelled such as Northern Ireland (l’Irlande du nord). Half of our participants, Dylan and Injoon, made it through to the final “sudden death” knock-out round! Towards the end of the competition the finalists Injoon and an older Gems Wellington Academy student were both on an endless roll of correct spellings. The final verdict for the competition was to place them both as victorious. So congratulations to Injoon for coming joint first!
Afterwards our students could not stop talking about the possibilities for next year. In the following years we hope to have more students in this fun academic enrichment. We also hope to host a similar event in our school next year

Dear parents and guardians,
The Prom Committee would like to formally notify you of an upcoming event that has been planned and organized since the beginning of the school year.
Prom is a high school tradition that celebrates not only the success and completion of high school education, but also the transition into the next part of our lives. Thus, the students of GAA are highly enthusiastic and excited about such an event, and we are thrilled to announce that Prom will take place later this year. We are working hard to ensure a memorable experience, and we hope every student invited can participate and enjoy this celebratory occasion.
This year’s Prom will be held at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi on the 26th of May, 2016. Please be aware that this event will be supervised by chaperone teachers to ensure safety and responsibility.
This event is made possible through the purchase of tickets at the cost of 450 AED, and fundraisers held throughout the year. We welcome and appreciate any further donations by parents. We would also like to acknowledge the help from GAAPA and Booster Club, and thank them for their unconditional support.
Should you have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact our Prom Committee Advisors via email:

Ms. Kamila Shakarchi: [email protected]
Warm regards,
Prom Committee
