News from our PYP Coordinator, Mike Hopaluk
Elementary Community Share
On Thursday morning, students from Grade 4 and 5 shared some of their learning from their Music classes. Students confidently shared their recorder and violin skills as they impressed the audience with how their commitment and determination towards learning a new instrument has paid off.
One boy and one girl from each class in Grades 4 & 5 was recognized as Sports Day All-Stars. These students exemplified competitive intensity while maintaining good sportsmanship and a positive attitude.
The Community Share was completed with the celebration of the students who received a Star Student award this week from their Music teachers for their demonstration of PYP attitudes and/or IB Learner Profile attributes. You can see more photos of the event here.

In 5C, we have been studying lots of different things. In math we are learning a lot about fractions. Mostly how to add, subtract, multiply, divide fractions, and even simplify.
In Reader’s Workshop we have been put into different book clubs and are reading fantasy books. We are learning to develop themes for different types of books and look deeply at characters thoughts, intentions, and actions.
The books we have been reading in our book clubs are Sisters Grimm, Tale of Desperaux, The Dragon of Lonely Island, The Lightning Thief, Bunnicula, and The City of Ember. Each book club involves reading and discussing a different book.
In Writer’s Workshop, our class is working on narratives. We all wrote some personal narratives that were about a small moment that happened in our lives that was really memorable. Now we are reading and revising our writing pieces. Sometimes we work in partners to revise.
In inquiry, we have been learning about matter. Mostly the four forms of matter. Solid, liquid, gas, and even plasma. Our unit of inquiry right now is How the World Works and we will each be investigating a commonly used material in the next few weeks.
We are having a great year!

KG1A is making connections about our different feelings and learning how to express these feelings using different resources. We also have loads of fun during our mindfulness practice where we get to “peace out”!
We are having lots of fun in our unit on How We Express Ourselves. In KG2A we have been learning about different ways stories can be told and what makes a good story. We are working on making our own story books and math story book. Also, students have been hard at work making their own costumes, props, and programs for the upcoming Arts Festival!
KG2 B had an eventful week celebrating the 100th day of school and performing in their community share. To celebrate the day 100 students wrote to 100 in several ways, practiced counting items to 100, wrote about 100 things they like and don’t like, and even saw what they could look like when they were 100 years old! For the community share students started by rewriting a favorite story to create “The Three Pink Flamingos Fly.” Students demonstrated their confidence and creativity by illustrating the story, performing a play, and also communicating meaning through song and dance. One KG2B student reports “We made a very good story because it has a beginning, middle, and ending. The characters are very funny. Especially the Pirate. And I like to sing.” Another student reported “Day 100 was the best because we got to do a bunch of fun stuff. The pictures of us made me laugh.” Great Job this week KG2B!
KG PE
This unit, our KG students will be inquiring into gymnastics and how they can use their bodies to create different shapes, patterns and movements. KG1 will learn a variety of movements and skills to build on their existing vocabulary, this includes hopping, jumping, leaping, sliding, rolling, among many others. The KG1 students will also get to experience ways of moving with some of the smaller equipment. KG2 will take their gymnastics a bit further, introducing more skills that may be more complex. We hope by the end of the unit that some of the KG2 students will be able to create a small routine with what they have learnt.
