News from the Elementary Principal
Hello GAA Community,
We launched our first KG community share this week. It was great to watch our students share learning from their classrooms and really get into the music. We have some talented singers in our KG program! The seatbelt safety song was targeted at raising awareness and buckling up in the back seat. I hope all our KG students (and their parents) take action and buckle up in the car!
The second Elementary community share was led by Grades 3, 4, and 5. The Star Student focus recognized collaboration. I know teachers had a hard time selecting just two students from each classroom as our classes are working so well together. Students were such effective communicators and used their strong presentation skills to engage the entire audience. This really demonstrated not only the importance of community sharing but the amazing experiences that are going on in GAA classrooms. You will notice as the year moves on that the community sharing events become almost entirely student led.
Many of our Grade level websites will be going “live” today. This will be another venue for you to visit and learn more about what is going on in your child’s grade level. Next week, all students will be receiving their passwords for raz-kids (reading), IXL (math), and A-Z (reading,
writing, science). These digital resources are sometimes drawn on in the classroom to enhance learning and are a wonderful resource to extend learning at home. Please learn more about these resources over the upcoming break with you child.
Transition reports will be coming out on October 2nd. This report will focus on how our students are transition into the 2014-2015 school year. Please reflect with your child over the break and ask plenty of questions regarding their experience at GAA so far. A cooperative parent-child goal setting activity will be sent home after the break. Both the transition report and goal setting activity will be included in your child’s portfolio and reflected on at student led parent-teacher conferences on November 5th and 6th.
For those of you who haven’t heard, Fiona Keith, our Elementary Secretary will be moving to GWA to take on the role of Parent Relations Executive there. Our Elementary Division will miss her dearly and wish her the best!
If you or someone you know is interested in apply for the Elementary Secretary Position or being a substitute teacher (qualified) please email me at [email protected].
I look forward to seeing our Grade 3-5 parents on Monday, September 28th for our Eco-ventures information event at 4pm.
Have a great weekend,
Ben Voborsky

Dear GAA community members,
We have completed another successful week in Elementary here at GAA. After attending today’s community share, I am thrilled to see the engaging, student driven work that is being done in our school. Students are proud of what they have accomplished and stand up on stage to discuss the Units of Inquiry and the Central Idea with poise and confidence.
For those parents of students in Grade’s 3, 4, and 5, please come to a presentation by Ecoventures on Sunday, the 28th of September at 4pm in the Auditorium. Here you will learn about the upcoming Ecoventures experiences for your children in Grades 3,4, and 5. These trips focus on team building exercises as well as problem solving. These experiences are sure to build confidence and self-esteem in ways that are not possible within the classroom. If you can, I strongly encourage you to come out to learn more about the types of activities and experiences that your child can have on one of these excursions. Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Josh Doubleday
