Grade 1
Introduction
In grade 1, we have been learning classroom routines, learning names and practicing our essential agreements. Students have been caring as they have been getting to know each other through greetings and sharing. As a grade level we just started our new unit of inquiry on Sharing the Planet. Our central idea is “We have a responsibility to share our environment for a peaceful world”. We chose this unit for its connections to proper behavior at school, classroom agreements and our culture of kindness.
For tuning in, students have been observing different pictures of playgrounds around the world! Students looked at these pictures and talked about the different things they see, think and wonder about theimages. This visible thinking routine encourages students to make careful observations and thoughtful interpretations.
Focussed Vocabulary includes: conflict, resolution, peaceful, environment, world, cause, effect, action, responsibility, strategies, sharing, choice, problem
Central Idea
We have a responsibility to share our environment for a peaceful world

News from our KG Vice Principal, Sally Potts
Dear KG Parents,
We have just completed our second week of learning in KG. It has been an absolute delight to observe our students engaged in powerful learning together with our team. Thank you to our community of parents who have been so supportive of us as we work together on the educational journey of our students.
As you know, the focus of our program is on play based learning through the Primary Years Program (PYP). Our students are gaining knowledge and understanding through careful planning of the learning in each of the classroom. Our culture of kindness is definitely evident as I visit the classrooms. The children will be exploring a unit focussed on, “Who We Are”. KG1 students will be learning about themselves, how we are the same and different and reflecting on their abilities and interests. KG2 students will be reflecting on who they are, their connections to others and responsibility.
Our focus at GAA is to provide the best possible learning experiences for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at the school.
We look forward to welcoming you at our "Back to School Night" on Monday, September 14th at 5pm.
Regards,
Sally Potts

KG1C in Action!
We have had a fun filled week, exploring the classroom and making friends. We completed handprints, explored with marble painting, put together face jigsaws and much more. It has been a big transition to the long day and the little ones have done a fantastic job adjusting.

This week in KG1 and KG2, students learned all about friendship and created a collaborative display based on Marcus Pfister’s “The Rainbow Fish”. Next week stop by the cafeteria hallway to see your child’s work.
