News from our IB Diploma Coordinator, Patrick Lyons
Dear Parents,
Monday saw a milestone event in the history of GAA. 33 students arrived in the morning ready for their first and GAA’s first IB World Exam. The students were a little apprehensive but had been prepared well by their English teachers and after Elissa Ballard came in at the start from the Elementary School to take them through a mindful routine to clear their minds of any distraction or anxiety, the students began their exams with purpose, focus and no trace of fear. Having seen the students leave the room smiling, I was confident that their families, their teachers and the students themselves had certainly done something right.
We have now had three days of exams and the scripts are flying off round the world to be scanned, read, marked and appreciated. The DP exams are a global event with strict security and rigorous rules to ensure that students in different time-zones on different continents are all given a fair chance to show off their skills as thinkers, inquirers and knowledgeable communicators. In Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa, Aberdeen and Albuquerque students see the same paper and demonstrate the level of understanding they have achieved in two years of inquiry and study. Our students have shown impeccable academic honesty up to now and I am sure their mature attitude will continue right to the end.
A quick quiz question for you - Which of these IB subjects will students take in this session?
A. Computer Science
B. Arabic
C. Norwegian
The answer is – all of the above. And they have already taken them! We have a diverse and talented cohort this year and I urge you to share your good wishes and confidence in these hard-working young people any chance you get. They even have work on through a UAE public holiday and the first day of the UAE weekend. The ‘world’ in 'world exams’ means that Thursdays and Fridays are working days for our students. So enjoy your long weekend but spare a thought for our 36 Seniors foregoing the fun to achieve something truly inspiring for our school.

A Night of Music
Secondary School Instrumentalists and IB Music students delivered a fantastic performance on the 25th April in their Second Semester Concert. The evening was a showcase of highlights from this semester’s repertoire and the first of many public performances by our IB Diploma Music students.
Thank you to all of the parents that supported this event and we look forward to doing it all again in December!

Dear parents and guardians,
The Prom Committee would like to formally notify you of an upcoming event that has been planned and organized since the beginning of the school year.
Prom is a high school tradition that celebrates not only the success and completion of high school education, but also the transition into the next part of our lives. Thus, the students of GAA are highly enthusiastic and excited about such an event, and we are thrilled to announce that Prom will take place later this year. We are working hard to ensure a memorable experience, and we hope every student invited can participate and enjoy this celebratory occasion.
This year’s Prom will be held at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi on the 26th of May, 2016. Please be aware that this event will be supervised by chaperone teachers to ensure safety and responsibility.
This event is made possible through the purchase of tickets at the cost of 450 AED, and fundraisers held throughout the year. We welcome and appreciate any further donations by parents. We would also like to acknowledge the help from GAAPA and Booster Club, and thank them for their unconditional support.
Should you have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact our Prom Committee Advisors via email:
Ms. Alexandra Fatu: [email protected]
Ms. Kamila Shakarchi: [email protected]
Warm regards,
Prom Committee
