News from our Elementary Principal, Ben Voborsky
Hello GAA Community,
I hope you all had a fantastic week. It was great to see our elementary students dressed up as their favorite book character. I want to thank our Elementary Student Council for coming up with this idea! It also tied in with our Readers Workshop Celebrations. If you would like to learn more about Readers and Writers Workshop visit http://readingandwritingproject.org/.

Students in Fourth grade have been inquiring into all body systems. Students have been using the Inquiry Cycle to learn about the five body systems and make connections to living a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
Students are in the final stages of the inquiry process in which they are preparing a presentation as experts about a specific body system. They will also take action and commit to making a healthy lifestyle change. During this unit, we have had some great learning experiences.
We have had some amazing learning opportunities! We watched a heart dissection, spoke with local physicians, attended the GAA Health and Wellness Summit, as well as conducted our own experiments.
Through all these learning experiences, the students have become very principled and knowledgeable about their body and how it functions. We have also been reflective of our daily habits, and challenge ourselves to change for the better!
In Unit 2, How We Organize Ourselves, we also had the opportunity to visit New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD). The students learned about innovation, art, and technology.

Elementary Community Share
On Thursday morning, students from Grade 1 and 2 shared some of their learning from their music classes with Ms. Caitlin and Ms. Deveor respectively. The children in Grade 1 demonstrated how singing and performing a slower song can allow people to focus on their mindfulness practices. The children in Grade 2 engaged the audience with how they demonstrated that musical performances are a result of an organized effort by the entire community of musicians, singers and dancers. The Community Share was completed with the celebration of the students who received a Star Student award this week for their demonstration of PYP attitudes and/or IB Learner Profile attributes. You can see more photos of the event here.

KG1G are busy preparing for The Harvest Festival. We read an interesting book called “The Hungary Caterpillar”. The students created their own Hungry Caterpillars for the festival. Students then took action and created their own books.
In KG2 we have started "Reading Workshop" and have been learning to read books independently, as well as in pairs. We have learnt that readers read books from cover to cover, and that they also re-read books. We have learnt that by re-reading a book we can put all the pages together, we can rethink beyond the book and we can try learning from the words in books.
KG2H had their very first Community Share last week. We had so much fun. “We are almost famous now, Ms. Laura right?” (a quote from one of our little stars).
We are looking forward to our next stage performance.
