News from the Math Department
School has started full swing and our students are learning to apply and adapt a variety of appropriate mathematical strategies to solve problems and monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving. Our students are able to investigate and organize and consolidate mathematical thinking through communication
Through the year the students not only learn about mathematics in the classroom, but they extend their knowledge beyond the classroom. At GAA we run the American Scholastic Mathematics Contests 6 times a year, starting in October. Last year our school placed in first place for Senior Division (Gr. 9-12) and Second place for Junior Division (Gr. 6-8). We are very proud of our students. http://www.asan.com/asma1.htm
Evert year our top students get invited to NYUAD (New York University of Abu Dhabi) around March to write the American Mathematics Contests. We look forward to taking our students to NYUAD.
Math Foundations: Personal Finance and Mathematics
Mr. Michael Palano
What would you do with five thousand bitcoins? A nice problem, if you have it. How would you invest it? How much would you save? What would you purchase? Problems like these are being answered in Math Foundations: Personal Finance and Mathematics. By knowing how certain topics in mathematics are applied to finance, calculations and decisions can be made. The use of percentages in sales, loans and investments help determine the amounts earned, borrowed and saved. Understanding investment alternatives and how they work can help students learn how to make use of their money by making proper investment decisions. By combining algebra required for college with financial topics covered in class, students will hopefully have the winning combination for a successful financial future.
