News from our Secondary Principal, Craig Randall
Dear Parents,
MAP testing for grades 6 through 10 begins Sunday, May 1.
Students will take this test on their laptops during their Math, English, Science and Social Studies classes.
These tests do not count for their grades but do provide us with additional information about each student's growth and achievement in reading, language usage, mathematics, and science. We have asked students to come prepared by getting a good night's rest, having something with which to write, bringing a book to read or school work to study in case they finish early, and to ensure their laptop is fully charged each morning.
You can support your child by encouraging them to take their time on the tests and to relax. Some students have requested the link to the sample test so they may practice using the scroll bar and the pop-up calendar:
http://warmup.nwea.org/warmup_start_educators_map.html
For more information, please visit www.nwea.org or for supporting your child: https://legacysupport.nwea.org/node/4701

News from our IB Diploma Coordinator, Patrick Lyons
Art shows, drama performances and a music concert involving both our Diploma grades have set the tone for academic excellence in the last few days and weeks but not all of our students’ achievements can be quite so public. In the next three weeks, the graduating class will be tested to the limit regarding thinking skills, depth of understanding and ability to communicate as we hold our first ever IB World Exams. This is a global event with students around the world taking the same exams on the same days in two twelve-hour windows. There are no retakes, no late arrivals and no excuses. Students who miss an exam have to wait till next November to try again.
The exams are rigorous, as is the security surrounding them and as a result, the scores and the IB Diplomas issued are valued and trusted by Universities around the globe. Grade 12 parents have been contacted and know that students need to be responsible for their punctuality, their preparation and the materials they do (and don’t) bring. We are ready to go at the school are very excited about what the outcome will be for our students. I surveyed the students recently and received an anonymous comment begging “Stop telling us how hard IB Diploma is. Tell us “you can do it” once in a while.” I got the message and shared it with staff at our meeting this week. It’s a fair comment because if you know Grade 12 like I do, you will know it is true. They CAN do it. So please, let’s all tell them every chance we get. My parting message to them was that I didn’t have to wish them luck because I know they can and will make their own.
Grade 12 and Grade 12 parents, your teachers believe in you. Take deep breaths and seize that moment.

GAA student and teachers perform with Andrea Bocelli
On Friday April 22nd, two members of our music team, Caitlin Smith – Elementary music, and Whitney Meininger – High School Choir - as well as one student represented GAA as part of the chorus that was able to sing with Andrea Bocelli at the DU forum!
All 3 auditioned to be part of this prestigious ensemble, and Jonah Delisi, grade 10, was the youngest member by about 10 years! This was an all professional ensemble, able to practice together only a few times before meeting Maestro Bernini and Andrea Bocelli, and even with difficult music, Jonah did a wonderful job keeping pace with all the adults around him!
It was incredible to get to sing with Andrea Bocelli, as well as perform for HH Sheikh Abudlla Al Nahyan, dignitaries from 5 gulf countries, and over 10,000 people in the audience!
We had a wonderful time singing together, and performing with the best musicians in the region – if you missed the concert, videos are popping up online – it was an amazing performance!

Dear parents and guardians,
The Prom Committee would like to formally notify you of an upcoming event that has been planned and organized since the beginning of the school year.
Prom is a high school tradition that celebrates not only the success and completion of high school education, but also the transition into the next part of our lives. Thus, the students of GAA are highly enthusiastic and excited about such an event, and we are thrilled to announce that Prom will take place later this year. We are working hard to ensure a memorable experience, and we hope every student invited can participate and enjoy this celebratory occasion.
This year’s Prom will be held at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi on the 26th of May, 2016. Please be aware that this event will be supervised by chaperone teachers to ensure safety and responsibility.
This event is made possible through the purchase of tickets at the cost of 400 AED, and fundraisers held throughout the year. We welcome and appreciate any further donations by parents. We would also like to acknowledge the help from GAAPA and Booster Club, and thank them for their unconditional support.
