News from our Head of School - Kathy Miner
Dear Parents,
Welcome back to school! We hope you enjoyed your time with family over the break and are returning refreshed and ready for a busy spring season back at school.
As we launch into the spring season, you’ll find important dates for upcoming events and activities throughout the school to help your family in planning ahead through to the end of the school year.
You’ll also find school holiday dates for the 2017-2018 school year to help you as you plan and look ahead to the coming year.
We are looking forward to a strong finish to the school year with many fantastic events and activities. Get ready for a busy and productive spring!
Please join me in welcoming our new Elementary Principal, Mr. Daniel Trimble, to GEMS American Academy. Dan and his wife Carol Trimble will join the Elementary team in August 2017. Carol will be joining the Elementary faculty in G5 and brings a wealth of experience as a teacher, literacy and learning coach and staff developer.
Dan Trimble currently serves as an Elementary Principal in Saint George, Utah, where he leads a dynamic school community focused on a holistic approach to education with an emphasis on the arts and magnate program for Gifted & Talented students. His school is currently engaged in inquiry-based instruction and project-based learning and teachers and are serious about their collaborative work in their Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s).
Dan’s education includes a BA in Psychology and Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish and German, a Master’s in Education as well as coursework and licensing endorsements in Administration, English as a Second Language and School Counseling.
With many years of Elementary teaching G4, Dan served a number of years as an instructional coach, staff developer and English as a Second Language teacher/coordinator before entering school administration. Earlier in his career, he taught Middle School Spanish and served as a High School Counselor.
With a rich and varied educational background, which includes teaching, instructional coaching and counseling, Dan is uniquely able to understand the complexities of a diverse K-12 school that emphasizes a Culture of Kindness.
Dan is described as a strong listener, collaborator, and caring leader who is focused on meeting the needs of all students. He is passionate about providing a holistic education in which all students can find their niche for success, building a strong Arts program in his current school and launching an enriching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program.
Dan’s School District Superintendent had this to say about his impact as a leader:
“Dan is a very competent Principal in our school district, has received thorough training relative to effective implementation of the Professional Learning Communities framework, and is currently managing a school that is performing at high levels academically. He is very easy to get along with, serves as a strong and contributing team member, and isn't afraid to tackle difficult issues. Daniel is also very flexible in his approach to things, he is always willing to help out in anyway he can, and I see him being able to adjust to new situations and environments very well. Together he and Carol make a very competent and dynamic pair. We will miss them dearly.”
Current Elementary Principal Ben Voborsky will be joining our GEMS sister school, Dubai American Academy, as the Deputy Superintendent next year. We wish Ben and his wife Sarah Shannon and family all the best in their new adventure.
Mr. Voborsky is already working closely with Mr. Trimble to ensure for a smooth transition of leadership for the coming year.

Dear GAA Community,
In hopes of saving our environment, whether locally or globally, the GIN Committee at GAA has launched a campaign to properly recycle electronics. If you have any broken electronic devices (ranging from headphones to toasters), batteries or light bulbs, please bring them into school and deposit them into the two designated green bins, located on the ground floor by the Reception desk or on the second floor by room 256. Don't throw them in the garbage; these electronics can be properly disposed of, recycled and reused. Lets help mother Earth stay clean! Thank you for your support, GIN Committee |
Please join the Secondary Arts Team and our talented students for an evening of celebration and enjoyment in the arts. Dear Parents,
Hello we are Habeebah Sweifi and Teodora Lupu, grade 11 IB students, and we are planning a Bone Marrow Registry Drive at GAA on April 20th between 4:00-5:00 PM in the Clinic. The Drive will be for adults between the age of 18-44, students not included. We are working with the American Community School's 'Circle of Life' organization that is partnered with the 'Be the Match' foundation. The procedure is simple, you would only have to complete some paperwork and have your mouth swabbed. We would appreciate if the community could help with this great cause and come register to be a possible donor. You could save someone's life!
For more information, contact:
[email protected] and [email protected]
Or watch this video on the procedure:

KG & Grade 1
Keita have launched a new Online System for ordering food. Please see the attached presentation detailing the food order process for KG1, KG2 and Grade 1 students. Hot meals are provided by Keita catering and delivered to the classroom. This is not mandatory and parents are welcome to send students with a packed lunch.
KG and Grade 1 students have lunch in their classroom and not in the cafeteria therefore the order process is different to that of students Grade 2-12, who purchase food in the cafeteria using the cashless system.
Kindly note the following:
- For students to be able to receive meals in their classroom, it is mandatory that parents register them on the online system, make the payment and select the order of the meals. This can only be done online.
- We suggest parents order a week in advance to avoid any disappointments and to ensure on time delivery to your child.Deadline for orders is 4pm the day prior.
- Any orders via email, telephone or at the cafeteria will unfortunately not be accepted.
-All current students registered and their credit balance will automatically be transferred to the new system.
If you have any questions on how to place the order or experience any difficulty with this system, please contact the Keita IT Department at [email protected] or at 056 939 4250. For general information, please contact their customer service at [email protected] or 800 – KEITA.
