News from the College Counselor
Which Country? A Country Not Mentioned
University systems in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada have been reviewed, as these tend to be the more popular systems where students submit applications. Suggested resources for information on other countries around the world include the education and consular section of that country’s embassy, i.e. EducationUSA, the university website, or other online databases such as
www.univ.cc or www.studylink.com.
American International Colleges & Universities
There are a number of competitive American international universities that offer educational degrees similar to those of American colleges and universities. Many of these schools are members of The Association of American International Colleges and Universities (AAICU). AAICU is an organization that is composed of a number of distinct, university-level institutions, which are accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies in the United States, or have an equivalent status.
AAICU institutions offer curricula that are cross-cultural in content and international in perspective within an American system of semester units and transferable course credits. The curricula tend to be comparative, interdisciplinary, and relate to the geographic areas in which member institutions are located. Full use is made of the resources available outside the campus in co- and extra-curricular programs, and for the integration of students into local life.
The entrance requirements and costs are comparable to those in the US.
Here are a few examples of American International Colleges and Universities:

GEMS Young Musician Award
Mr Holland accompanied Jin Park (Grade 7), Junseo Park (Grade 7) and Haeley Ahn (Grade 10) to the first GEMS Young Musician of the Year competition on Thursday 22nd January. The competition was open to all GEMS schools within the UAE and was held at the GEMS World Academy in Dubai.
A total of 29 students from 7 schools competed in the event which was a showcase of some of the finest young musical talent in the UAE. The students were given a master class in round 1 and the 29 students were gradually reduced to 15 for the second round. Competition was fierce and we are delighted to announce that Haeley Ahn was one of the successful musicians to proceed to round 2 on the day with an absolutely fantastic performance during the morning. Unfortunately the GAA students didn't proceed past the second round for the final event which was due to be held on the 23rd January. In respect to the death of King Abdullah, the final has been postponed until a later date. The final will see the top 6 six students perform 2 pieces for the title of GEMS Young Musician of the Year. We look forward to the growth of this competition in the coming years and the fantastic opportunity that it offers our own GAA students by performing at such a high level. |
