News from our Secondary Principal, Craig Randall
Dear parents,
I would like to bring a safety concern to your attention:
It has been brought to our attention that some of our secondary school students have been seen crossing 3rd Street near the back of the school in an unsafe manner.
3rd Street is a very busy thoroughfare with heavy traffic, particularly in the afternoon when our school day comes to an end. Some students are leaving the back gate of the school and running across 3rd Street. We believe these students are heading to the Al Raha Gardens Mall. These students are not using the crosswalk or respecting the traffic control signals provided at the intersection of 16th Street and 3rd Street and are making an unsafe choice to run across the street in the middle of the block.
This is a serious safety concern – we obviously do not want our students to put themselves in danger of oncoming traffic. Teachers addressed this safety concern with all our students this week through our advisory classes and assembly program. We ask for your support and assistance in also delivering this message to your children. If you allow your children to go to the Al Raha Gardens Mall after school, please direct them to use the crosswalk.
We have also added some additional supervision after school near the school gate. As this is happening after school, off school grounds, it is difficult for us to supervise directly. Through safety education and your support, students will make safer choices by crossing at the controlled crosswalk.
Exams are fast approaching. Here is the link for the grade 12 non IB exam schedule:

Grade 12 students are done at the conclusion and are no longer required to attend classes. The expectations from here are to attend the graduation rehearsals of which they are already aware.
Here is the timetable showing what students are doing during the grade 9-11 HS exam week:

For all Exams:
- Like any other school day, students are expected to be in school uniform for exams.
- We suggest that students arrive at least 30 minutes before their exam. ]
- Students are expected to leave campus after their last exam for the day is completed.
- If students are absent for an exam and wish to sit a retake they must present a medical certificate for the original date of the exam.
Sincerely,
Craig Randall
As the school year comes to a close, well wishes for a great summer and expectations for seeing everyone again in September, are universally familiar. However, at international schools, it is more common to say goodbye and best wishes for the future, because our reality is that students, teachers, administrators, and staff will move on. This year, I am among the group of leavers. Mrs. Katie Leishear, our current Personal/Social Counselor, will transition into the college counseling role and we are working together to ensure a smooth changeover.

After studying a unit called ‘Au café’ the French Phase 1/2 students put their knowledge into practice at La Brioche, Khalifa City. Madame Newman and Madame Broderick took a group of 27 grade 7s and 8s to the café next to GAA recently. The students read and understood the French items on the menu and practiced ordering food and drinks with their teachers. All students talked about what they had ordered and gave opinions about their foods. Some tasted foods they had never had before, such as ‘croque monsieur’ and ‘croissant au fromage’. Jai Patel out did everyone by ordering the most food and there were more milkshakes and ‘crêpes’ than the teachers had ever seen!
All our students were exemplary in their behavior, manners and gratitude to the teachers and staff at La Brioche and we were very proud to have such excellent students to represent our school.
Paying the bill was quite an experience for them, many of whom, had never had to pay a bill before and it was clear that they all learned valuable life skills in doing so; counting money, working out change and knowing how much their meal came to. Some of the girls took quite a while to work this out but quotes such as ‘Can we do this every lesson?’ and ‘ This was sooooo much fun’ were heard before our return to school so we can only assume that everyone had a lovely meal and that they could all order confidently in a café in France.

Dear parents and guardians,
The Prom Committee would like to formally notify you of an upcoming event that has been planned and organized since the beginning of the school year.
Prom is a high school tradition that celebrates not only the success and completion of high school education, but also the transition into the next part of our lives. Thus, the students of GAA are highly enthusiastic and excited about such an event, and we are thrilled to announce that Prom will take place later this year. We are working hard to ensure a memorable experience, and we hope every student invited can participate and enjoy this celebratory occasion.
This year’s Prom will be held at the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi on the 26th of May, 2016. Please be aware that this event will be supervised by chaperone teachers to ensure safety and responsibility.
This event is made possible through the purchase of tickets at the cost of 450 AED, and fundraisers held throughout the year. We welcome and appreciate any further donations by parents. We would also like to acknowledge the help from GAAPA and Booster Club, and thank them for their unconditional support.
Should you have any inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact our Prom Committee Advisors via email:
Ms. Alexandra Fatu: [email protected]
Ms. Kamila Shakarchi: [email protected]
Warm regards,
Prom Committee
