They will be responsible for reflecting upon work samples that have been previously selected with guidance and support from their teacher. All three parties; the student, parents and the teacher, collaborate to establish and identify areas of strength and possible areas for improvement. The conversation may lead to the setting of new goals, with all parties determining how they can support the achievement of these goals. The final 10 minutes will be a parent and teacher dialog. Single subject teachers will be available throughout the day in the KG area and in the library for elementary and are eager to meet with you as well.
Here is a rough outline of how the first 20 minutes of your conference might go:
1. Welcoming you and your child
2. Classroom walk-through; your child explaining any points of interest (photos, work on display, learner profile, favorite book, word wall, central idea etc.)
3. Sharing of portfolio and/or other relevant work for celebration
4. Discussing ways to progress and goal setting
5. Conclusion
The final 10 minutes will be a more traditional parent-teacher conference where parents can inquire into areas while their child waits outside.
To schedule an appointment with your class teacher for the three way conference, please follow the link: http://tiny.cc/thelauncher.
This is also a great time to discuss communication with your teacher and the use of the GAA passport, grade level website, and email. Please review the elementary handbook for discussions regarding homework.
Have a great weekend,

IB PYP Learner Profile Of the Month
What is an IB PYP School?
It is a school that, regardless of location, size or constitution, strives towards developing an internationally minded person.
What is an internally minded person?
It is a person who demonstrates the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.
The aim of the IB PYP is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
IB PYP Learners strive to be inquirers, communicators, caring and more in their goal to become internationally minded.
In conjunction with our Culture of Kindness, we are keen for our students to develop the IB Learner Profile, inside and outside of the classroom. Therefore we would like to ask our parents to support our goal and encourage your child to develop these attributes. Every month, we will be posting ideas in the newsletter that you can share with your child to develop their IB Learner Profile. If you have questions about the IB Learner Profile, please do not hesitate to speak with your classroom teacher or the IB PYP Coordinator, Sofia Lyons.

IB Learner Profile for the month of November is OPEN MINDED
Students will understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories. They are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view and are willing to grow from the experience.
Activities for Parents:
• Encourage your child to try out new things- new food, new games and new activities.
• Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way.
• Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.

Learning about the Harvest in Kindergarten
Over the last several weeks all Kindergarten students have been learning about the Harvest. We have defined “Harvest” as “taking food from where it grows so we can eat it.” The children now know where some of the ingredients we use are grown and how they are harvested.
While making Egg-less Sugar cookies they now understand how wheat is harvested. We learned how dried wheat plants are cut from the field by both hand and machine. The children were taught hand motions to model how wheat berries can be ground between two heavy stones to make flour for baking.
When we had our pasta buffet, the children learned about the Corn Harvest in Ontario, Canada. They were shown pictures of the Harvest on the farm where Ms. Erin’s grandmother was born. Her cousin, “Farmer Paul”, now grows corn and soybeans on the farm. The children now understand that corn in addition to the wheat plants can also be harvested in two ways, by hand and by machine. Please visit this link to see some of the photos which were viewed in class.

This week the KG 2 children are learning about the life cycle of carrot plants as they make delicious Chocolate Carrot Cake muffins.

Elementary Excitement
Ms. Melodie's Grade 1D classroom was transformed into a hospital for sick sentences. 24 doctors performed surgery on these sick sentences by bandaging up their errors in punctuation and capitalization. We are happy to report that all the sick sentences have healed nicely due to the hard work of our experienced sentence surgeons!
Grade 1A made pattern hats to celebrate fall. Students used pumpkins to create patterns on sentence strips and made them into hats. Students were then crowned a “Pattern Prince” or “Pattern Princess.”
GAA After School Activity
Some of our students attending a Crafts and Decoration After School Activity use many different items such as seashells, colored paper
and household items to create so very nifty crafts.

Drawings by Me |
|
We are pleased and excited to announce that over the next week students will have the opportunity to create artwork specifically for the Drawings By Me program, which can then reproduce the artwork in a number of useful formats, including coffee mugs, travel mugs, and greeting cards.
Students will create their artwork at school and then bring it home with the
order form and envelope, which you will fill out, enclose payment (exact cash or
heck, payable to GAA), and return by no later than November 17th.
Please look for your child’s Drawings By Me order form by November 9th.
The envelopes can be returned to the classroom teacher or there will be a box in the front lobby that it can be returned to.
Another piece of art may be substituted as long as it is on white A4 paper and is
in a “landscape” or horizontal orientation.
Envelopes must only be sealed by parents and after the artwork and exact
payment has been enclosed.
If you wish not to buy anything you can keep the piece of art at home!
Sincerely,
The GAA Art Department
