News from our Secondary Vice Principal, Derek Lea
Dear Parents,
As the end of the school year approaches, we take time to recognise, honour, and showcase our students, their accomplishments, and their skills. Last week, we celebrated our students with our academic and citizenship awards ceremonies, our grade 8 promotion ceremony, and our prom. This week, the celebrations continued.
On Tuesday night, Ms. Meinenger’s Choir classes entertained our community with a spectacular array of vocal talent. Students in grades 6 through 12 sang a diverse selection of music ranging from jazz, to music soundtracks, to contemporary top 40. Their performances were outstanding, and along with our congratulations to the students, we must extend our thanks to Ms. Meinenger. She has taken first time singers and accomplished musicians and turned them into a cohesive unit – worthy of our praise.
Wednesday night was our annual Spring Arts Festival. Mr. Hull, Mr. Eddens, Ms. McGreggor, Mr. Carlin, Mr. Holland, Mr. Robertson, and Ms. Meinenger showcased their students’ work throughout the foyer and mezzanine. While parents and staff enjoyed visual art pieces - produced by students from grades 6-12 - they were constantly entertained by pop-up performances from our Choir students, Band students and our Theatre students. It was truly a feast for the senses as one could view the art, watch a performance of dance and Shakespeare, and listen to the music from above. If you have not attended this event in the past, please watch for it on next year’s calendar as it is an spectacular evening and an amazing use of our beautiful facility.
To cap off the week, we are saying congratulations and good luck to the Graduating Class of 2016. This is our first International Baccalaureate Diploma Program Graduating Class, and we are very proud of everything they have accomplished. This is the culminating event for a school like ours – an opportunity to celebrate the ultimate goal for a K-12 school – sending our Senior Students off to the next chapter in their lives.
Indeed, congratulations to all of our students for their hard work, perseverance, resiliency, and achievements; in their academics, in the arts, in athletics, and in becoming outstanding young adults.
Regards,
Derek Lea
