News from our Elementary Principal, Ben Voborsky
Hello GAA Community,
Today we had the final elementary community share of the year and it was fantastic! Grade 4F and Grade 3F reflected on their school year. The highlights of each student demonstrated how much they grew as learners and people; not to mention how much fun they had. One of my favourite contributions was a letter sharing a new students perspective of join the GAA community next year. It started off about how nervous she was being in a new country, a new school, and one so diverse. The letter ended with how successful she was, how this was her favourite school year ever, and who her close friends where. Those friends were from 8 different countries. This community share really embodied what the PYP is to me.
Star student awards were presented for Caring and we finished off with the school song. I also reminded students to share their learning with you, their parents, as report cards are accessible online today! So parents, please remember to log into the GLG www.gemslearninggateway.com and follow the instructions provided in the email today from GAA Communication regarding how to log in. I know your students are excited to share this with you.
We have been actively planning for the 2015-2016 school year. Resource orders have already started arriving, teaching and educational assistant assignments have been finalised, and orientation planning is well under way. Next year, KG will once again have a “soft start” to transition our youngest learners back into a full day of school. In looking forward we have two positions that I would like to announce vacancies for. I feel very strongly that these positions will be a tremendous support for our overall GAA program. If you or someone you know is interested in an Athletics and Activities Assistant opportunity or a Lead Educational Assistant opportunity, please email me at [email protected] by Sunday, July 5th more information including job description.
Have a great weekend!

GAA Library
The school has a subscription to some websites where you can access many stories that will entertain and delight your child. To access these visit the GAA library webpage at www.gaalibrary.weebly.com
Reading aloud and sharing stories with your child is a valuable way to spend time together. Reading and storytelling helps promote language and literacy and brain development. You are helping your child become familiar with sounds, words, language and the value of books. This all builds the vital foundations for your child’s early literacy skills, paving the way for them to go on to read successfully later in life.
This special time together promotes bonding and helps to build your relationship with your child, laying the groundwork for your child’s social and interpersonal skills. Exploring stories also helps your child learn the difference between ‘real’ and ‘make- believe’.
Reading or telling stories can also be safe ways to explore strong emotions, which can help your child understand change, as well as new or frightening events. Books about going to the dentist or hospital, starting at child care or making new friends will help your child learn about the world around him.
Just by looking at books with your child, you can be a great storyteller and a good model for using language and books. Your child will learn by watching you- so make it fun, make it enjoyable and foster a life long love of reading!
