BeaconOfHopeUAE
Beacon of Hope Initiative
Twenty-five GAA students attended a Ramadan Iftar as part of the Beacon of Hope UAE campaign. The project assembles solar-powered lights for refugees in Sierra Leone and Iraq (as well as other places) in order to provide light for young children. The “Beacon of Hope” initiative, launched by Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan has delivered light to thousands of children across the world.
Our students, parents, and teachers gave up their own time to assemble the kits and to write messages of hope to the intended recipients. To do so at such short notice is testament to the community spirit that so many of our students have – we could not have done this without their amazing attitude.
Special thanks go to the following students for attending the event and giving up their time for such a noble cause.

This could not have been done without the support of the teachers; Abhishek Singh, Heather Broderick, Dave Holland, Rawya Wehbe, Fatma Chabanova; and our parents, who also gave up their time to support the event.
Thank you for making GAA stand out in the community, on behalf of Larisa Miller and Mr. Broderick. #BeaconOfHopeUAE
A brief on the event from Business Development Management, Larisa Miller, from the office of H.H Sheikha Shamma Bint Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan :
A Ramadan Iftar, sponsored by the Journalists Association in support of Beacon of Hope UAE, was held at the Beach Rotana on 06 JUN 2017, in honor of the Year of Giving. Students from GEMS American Academy and Al Shohub Private School attended as a gesture of volunteerism and youth philanthropy. The students were given the beacon-in-a-box solar light kits to assemble, after which they also wrote notes of friendship, and these lights and notes will be going to children living in impoverished, war-torn or politically unstable regions of the Middle East and Africa. By assembling the lights, the students gained a lesson in the science and physics of light, renewable energy, as well as awareness of the struggles that other youth globally face daily, having to chase the sunset home to do homework or read.
In addition to the students from GEMS American Academy and Al Shohub School, along with members of school faculty and their families, the event was attended by members of the Beacon of Hope UAE team on behalf of founder, HH Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, members of the Journalists Association, WAM (Emirates News Agency), and volunteers of Beacon of Hope UAE.
BOH is a UAE-based not-for-profit initiative that aims to make a positive impact on youth living in impoverished or war-torn regions through education and youth philanthropy, by delivering simple solar light kits, which the children are taught to assemble. In addition, the children are given a basic reading book, uniting light and literacy. Light and literacy combine to generate hope, and with hope, all things are possible.
We would welcome volunteers, and fully support the students need for volunteer hours. They can contact me at our website, www.beaconofhopeuae.com, and fill out the contact form, which goes to our volunteer coordinator.
As volunteers (and we encourage ANYONE to volunteer), the students will have regular interaction with not only Her Highness, but with the Minister of Youth and Minister of Climate Change and Environment - both of whom regularly participate in our events, and they each take time to get to know and interact with each of the student volunteers. We would love to encourage any of you to consider volunteering with us, and we are thankful for the support.
Undoubtedly, we look forward to working with each of the students again.
Kindest regards,
Larisa Miller

KG & Grade 1
Keita have launched a new Online System for ordering food. Please see the attached presentation detailing the food order process for KG1, KG2 and Grade 1 students. Hot meals are provided by Keita catering and delivered to the classroom. This is not mandatory and parents are welcome to send students with a packed lunch.
KG and Grade 1 students have lunch in their classroom and not in the cafeteria therefore the order process is different to that of students Grade 2-12, who purchase food in the cafeteria using the cashless system.
Kindly note the following:
- For students to be able to receive meals in their classroom, it is mandatory that parents register them on the online system, make the payment and select the order of the meals. This can only be done online.
- We suggest parents order a week in advance to avoid any disappointments and to ensure on time delivery to your child.Deadline for orders is 4pm the day prior.
- Any orders via email, telephone or at the cafeteria will unfortunately not be accepted.
-All current students registered and their credit balance will automatically be transferred to the new system.
If you have any questions on how to place the order or experience any difficulty with this system, please contact the Keita IT Department at [email protected] or at 056 939 4250. For general information, please contact their customer service at [email protected] or 800 – KEITA.
