News From the Elementary Principal Ben Voborsky
Hello GAA Community,
Spring break is here! What a stretch of excitement it has been since winter break. It is now a great time to reflect on everything that we have accomplished and what we can improve upon between now and the end of the school year. I want to continue to build a GAA Elementary Culture focused on continuous improvement and a growth mindset. If you are looking for a great spring break read Mindset by Carol Dweck should be on the top of your list http://mindsetonline.com/
Student led conferences will be taking place on April 22nd and 23rd. Conference booking will once again be digital and teachers will release their timetable after spring break. For those families who are new to conference scheduling, detailed “how-to’s” will be included in the information sent after the break.
Over the break, keep your children reading for pleasure and journaling! I know they love to share their experiences when they return to school with their classmates and teacher.
And remember! Take a selfie or two for them to share.
Have a relaxing and safe holiday,
Ben Voborsky

Science collaboration
KG 2B
On Tuesday four Grade 8 students, Matt, Maged, Julia and Nina, came to KG2B with their science teacher M.r Lyons. They did four sound experiments with us and taught us about sound. We explored what sound waves look like, we saw what the sound of our voices looked like on the laptop, we inquired into what it might be like to be colorblind and we saw how sound waves affected water. We have been inquiring into different materials during our current unit so we were very curious as to how sound works with different materials. We had a great time using our research and inquiry skills and now we are so much more knowledgeable! Thank you M.r Lyons and Grade 8.

The students really enjoyed learning about science from Yasmin , Ibrahim, Harry and Josh. Yasmin shared a lesson on sound vibrations using a guitar, which the children loved, Ibrahim talked about color mixing and the light spectrum, Harry used a tuning fork and water, as well as a slinky to demonstrate how sound moves, and Josh used a computer program to let the children actually see how their voices make sound. It was a great time for all of the students.

8th grade students from Mr. Patrick Lyons’ class came to show us some science experiments, including:
- Resonance tubes in water with tuning forks. - echoes in wet tubes
- Signal Generator and Oscilloscope – see your own voice and make every kind of noise
- Resonance on a guitar string – knock paper over using sound
- Ishihara plates – see what it is like to be colour-blind with disappearing numbers
