News from our Elementary Principal, Ben Voborsky
Hello GAA Community,
What a great 2015-2016 school year it has been! Our students have all grown and developed as internationally minded inquirers. Evidence of this growth and development went home this week in Grades 2-5 with a letter and your students MAP assessment feedback. You can find resources for parents on the NWEA website if you would like to learn more about the MAP assessment. KG1-G5 End of Year Report Cards will be available digitally on OASIS on June 23rd. These will be celebrations of learning as all our of student strived to meet their individual potentials this year.
GAA is well prepared to welcome students back August 28th for the 2016-2017 school year. Resources, staffing, and schedules/timetables are all in place. The Elementary Pedagogical Leadership Team (principal, vice principals, and PYP coordinators) will all be returning. We will decrease the size of Elementary program next year so classrooms will shift a bit and we will be doing some moving this summer! I will welcome new teachers the second week of August so they are well acquainted with GAA. Our KG students will begin with their traditional “soft” start to get them back into the school routine. One of the big changes next year is that the Elementary school will move to a five day schedule so KG1-G12 will be aligned. For our Grade 1 students, this means they will have PE four times a week. I am excited and can assure another fabulous year.
As we head off to summer, I would like to highlight GAA’s addition online learning platforms. Not only your child’s classroom online resources are available but, incase you were not aware, the GAA Library resource page has KG and Elementary specific sections. Please have a look while on vacation. Safe travels to all and I look forward to your child’s stories of summertime experiences with family.
Enjoy your break,
Elementary Principal

The Music Video Project:
Students from 2nd and 3rd grade classes produced music videos using songs they performed at the Elementary School’s Arts Festival. This culminating project began at the beginning of the school year when students embarked on a musical journey that led them to the creation of songs to perform for the Arts Festival. As a way to integrate technology (music and video production), we developed the videos’ soundtracks using Logic and Garageband, and edited video footage using iMovie. Thanks to JP, who served as our technician, we were able to produce six music videos.
On June 2, we had the screening of the music videos in the planetarium. Thank you James Walker for helping with the screening.

Let Someone “Barrow” Your Marrow!
Abu Dhabi - On Thursday, June 9th at noon, at the GAA clinic, 29 volunteers from GAA joined the International Bone Marrow registry. Bone marrow donations are planned to be sent to the U.S.A. The reason is to hopefully save a woman’s life. The Circle of Life group collected DNA by putting 4 cotton swabs in each person’s mouth. The swabs will be sent to the U.S.A.(Be the Match Organization). Then the U.S.A. will check whether it is a good match or not.The purpose was to save a woman’s life, who has leukemia cancer.
There were 29 adults that volunteered to donate to the woman who has cancer. This included our librarian, teachers from elementary and high school, the nurse, and the DP coordinator. One of our teachers, Mr. Brad, said “I feel excited, but obviously kind of nervous, I feel like everybody should do it.” Our librarian, Ms. Kerryn, said “I feel good that I could save a woman’s life, but I am scared.” Leukemia is a disease that is a type of blood cancer.
If the U.S.A. checks the DNA and confirms that it is a good match, they could send it to England, which is the place where the sick woman, named Amber, lives. Many lives could be saved from these donations.
For more information about Circle of Life and Be the Match visit the “Circle of Life group” on Facebook or bethematch.org.
