News from our Elementary Vice Principal, Louise Dunn
Dear Parents,
We are very excited to be welcoming literacy specialist Erin Kent to our school next week. Erin is here from February 11 until February 16, 2017, working with staff on reading instruction through the framework of readers workshop. Her work will include an all-day training session on Saturday; yes teachers go to school just like everyone else! Additionally, she will be in classrooms working with teachers and students helping everyone in the elementary school deepen their knowledge about teaching and learning in readers workshop.
Readers Workshop is a highly researched methodology for instruction that allows students to develop their ideas through inquiry within the genre being studied. Erin will be giving a talk for parents on February 15, 2017 at 3.10pm. If you would like to hear more about how we teach literacy at GAA, and how to support your child we look forward to seeing you next week.
Regards,
Louise Dunn

In 4C, we have been expressing ourselves through the Arts. Whether it’s writing odes, haikus or diamante poems, sharing our favourite poems during our weekly Poetry Slam, or creating art inspired by Kandinsky or MC Escher, our class has embraced the attitudes of creativity and appreciation. Through our discussions about art, we have concluded that people can have very different views about what they see and feel (perspective) about a piece. Although we may disagree, we are always respectful when listening to the ideas of others. In discussing the importance of beliefs and values to art, our class created paintings to depict some of our own beliefs or values. If you see a 4C student, ask them to explain what they have painted and why they chose to express that particular belief or value—it will lead to very interesting discussions!
KG2I students have been learning all about patterns over the past few weeks. Students have been learning to copy and extend patterns, as well as create some of their own! We have been using 2D shapes in our patterns, as well as a range of other objects and materials!
